les Immatériaux - Writing Project

A collective writing experiment that in the fore field of the les Immatériaux Exhibition (conceived by Lyotard for the Centre Beaubourg, Paris 1985) , examines the "Effects of the new information technologies on the genesis of thought", represents an early example of inter-textual text production by means of networked computer terminals. A broad experimentalf discourse on the a variety of levels:

1. Primary Writing Process: 30 Authors from different disciplines (art, literature, science, technology) write via interconnected personal computers for half a year into a central memory bank.

2. Areas of Meaning, The text building blocks are 2 - 10 line definitions of 50 catchwords, that relate to themes in the exhibition.

3. Competence, Power Structure: All definitions are available to everyone and can be added to, disputed, varied at will.

4. Interaction, Active Reader: The lexicon of this process is also openly accessible to visitors in the "Library Labyrinth" as an open information system during the exhibition. Every reader can register.

5. Social Field: Outside the museum, the texts circulate via MiniTel.
