The Internet is presently in the process of becoming a multimedia mass medium: in parallel to the supply of classical text oriented information and communications structures, an increasing growth in the visual flow of information has developed since the introduction of graphic user interfaces. From film databases, and previews (stills and digital video), film critiques, studies and degree dissertations, to film themes, information exchanges and distribution, festivals and premieres etc. ... all can be found on the commercial servers from the large multimedia concerns by interested cinematographer, or others interested in this genre, as well as at film academies and media-art, film magazines, and publishers, and also of course on the homepages of the cinematographers themselves.Beyond this, very specific new artistic forms for the direct presentation of multimedia documents within the Web are developing, which in the main retain a co-operative flair, and which provoke both reaction and comment, as well as reciprocal action amongst the viewers, whilst generating a flow of material. The revolutionary potential of the Gutenberg Galaxy crosses and merges within the global web, but not without the pseudo democratic effects that the mass media creates in something new and of quality. Everyone can become sender/recipient, writer/reader, producer/consumer on the same terms.
